College algebra is a course that many college students have always been accustomed to, but recently it’s become an inclusion into most high school curricula as well. This is mainly due to Arizona having shifted the standards required from two credits of math, up to three, and now four, meaning that students have to supplement with some additional class. The interesting thing about this class is that it can vary wildly between the high school and college level. Most of the time, a college algebra tutor isn’t required, but can be helpful in analyzing important real-life concepts, mainly finance.
College Level
At the college level, college algebra is vastly different than the course that some of us have taken in high school. While the course covers much of the same topics we’ve already seen in algebra like quadratics, linear functions, and polynomials, it takes a more practical approach through showing you real world applications. Something as simple as linear functions (slope, intercepts, the stuff we know from our younger years) can become a bit more complicated when we put it into perspective of our everyday lives. The course is relatively the same at Mesa Community College, Arizona State University, and even Rio Salado. If you need assistance in college algebra, A-Squared Math Tutoring is here to help!
High School
The high school college algebra course is heavier in algebra than anything else. While it will touch on finance concepts like compound interest, exponential decay and growth, and some basic statistics, it’s simply there to meet graduation guidelines for high school students. Some schools have chosen to start including a personal finance course in lieu of this class for students which, in our opinion, is far more valuable to students in the long run. College students will bear not only the advanced algebraic concepts but also the personal finance aspects as well.
There’s no reason to struggle through college algebra! Many of the concepts in this course can easily be taught over the span of a few hours.
